Founded in Seattle in 1970 as Professional Credit Management, we initially focused on helping small businesses with accounts receivable. Our founder, Dave Knutzen, quickly realized that service-based businesses, especially healthcare professionals, struggled with collections. At the time, only 4% of the people in the United States were covered by dental insurance, and 96% were private pay. Dave eventually merged the business with a company in Salem, Oregon called HASCO. They specialized in factoring accounts receivable for dental offices. 

 

In the mid-1970s, as clients sought industry benchmarks, Dave conducted one of the first dental practice surveys, launching a deeper involvement in practice management. By the 1980s, he pioneered practice valuations, helping new dentists fresh out of dental school acquire established practices—one of the first companies in the Northwest to begin doing this..

 

As the company expanded, Dave joined an organization called the American Academy of Dental Practice Administration, gaining insights and connections that brought top-tier seminars to clients in Spokane and Seattle. In 2008, he partnered with Todd McVay, who took over the business in 2011. Dave remained involved as a consultant on practice transitions until his retirement in 2019.  Dave Knutzen passed away in 2024. His legacy of mentorship, guidance, and commitment to the dental community will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

 

Today, McVay Dental Transitions continues Dave’s legacy of supporting dental practices with expert guidance, innovative solutions, and a commitment to our clients.
